Two laws of Physics as it relates to Sound Healing
The Law of Entrainment
Inner-work is based on vibration. Everything is energy. And when there is a particular note or sequence of harmonics that registers within your energetic system, it potentially unlocks cellular memory — sort of like a key in the keyhole — the doors open and whatever was waiting to be released it released.
Our cellular structure and nervous system is affected by vibration. Music and sound vibration carves new neural pathways through the brain, where memory and emotion co-mingle. When I get people relaxed, they can allow the sounds to penetrate consciousness. Then you deepen further into a calm state entraining with the Tibetan Singing Bowls or the monochord.
Sometimes the harmonics or overtones will vibrate at the same frequency as certain body memories — this is called ‘mutual phase-locking.’ This is when an immediate release presents, flushing out the issue that was revealed. Really? Amazing isn’t it? As I shared earlier, we are carving new neural pathways through the brain where memory and emotion co-mingle. We can clear past patterns of behavior (emotional attachments) and rigid held beliefs to create spaciousness within. Far beyond ordinary states of relaxation, inner landscapes shift naturally as cellular memory is accessed, to move beyond the intellect.
The Law of Entrainment, explained by Steve Robertson in his position paper on “How Music Affects Consciousness” shared about “mutual phase-locking of two oscillators’. It was first described by a Danish physicist in 1767. This Law of Physics was discovered one afternoon as the physicist observed the armature motion of two pendulum type clocks that he had placed side-by-side on a fireplace mantel. Initially, the armatures swung in opposition to one another. Then, after a short period of time, they began swinging in unison (entraining). This Law of physics occurs as a result of energy always seeking the path of least resistance or, said another way, finding the most efficient means of expressing itself. In other words, objects (clock armatures) moving in unison (harmony/entrain) expresses a more efficient use of energy than when they move in opposition (disharmony) to one another.”
The Law of Sympathetic Vibration
Sympathetic Vibration carries a strength, whereby the intention of the facilitator and conductor, as well as the musicians, communicate through transference the emotional message of the composition or, for me, the sound journey. Thus, you feel the corresponding emotional essence of the compositional intent. And my intention is always that ‘Everyone in the group energy receive exactly what they need according to the will of their soul.’ You come away from the sound journey experience with a felt sense and deep knowingness (in your highest aspect of self, your soul) unique to you. It is a personalized experience even in a group setting.
Steve Robertson shares more from his position paper. “The Law of Sympathetic Vibration works like this: take two acoustical (string-type) musical instruments, such as a piano, violin, or guitar, and place them near one another. As the string on instrument A is struck, the vibration from that instrument will resonate and carry across the room striking the strings on the untouched instrument B causing it to vibrate. Likewise, this Law of Physics is what facilitates the communication and transference of a song’s emotional message (harmony or melody) from the mind of the composer and its performers to the mind of the listener, thus causing the person to feel and to take on the corresponding emotional essence of a song’s compositional intent (happy or depressed, peaceful or violent, hopeful or hopeless, and so on). Similarly, the Law of Sympathetic Vibration explains why a person gets ‘goose bumps’ when listening to a song.”
